Bâton Rouge: Where Downtown Goes for Ribs and a Proper Pour
Some nights call for small plates and theories; other nights call for a rack of ribs, a cold pint and a table of friends who don’t want to share. Bâton Rouge Grillhouse & Bar is downtown Ottawa’s answer to the second kind of night — a big, confident room in the business core where the grill runs hot, the bar keeps pace and nobody leaves hungry.
The Concept
The Canadian chain has been grilling since 1992, and its founding recipe hasn’t moved an inch: ribs slow-cooked on low heat for seven and a half hours, then basted in the house BBQ sauce. Steaks are Canada AAA, hand-selected for marbling, aged and finished with the house spice blend. It is a formula, but a formula that took decades to earn its swagger.
What to Order
The signature ribs are the reason most tables exist — fall-off-the-bone after their marathon in the smoker’s low heat. Beyond that: AAA Reserve steaks, lobster when the occasion demands, burgers for the casual crowd and a bar mixing classics alongside a solid beer selection. Portions run generous; pace yourself accordingly.
The Space
A roomy grillhouse in the downtown core, minutes from Parliament Hill: dark wood, deep booths, a lively bar and enough floor space that big groups don’t have to whisper. The energy climbs after office hours and stays up through the evening.
Who It’s For
After-work crews closing out the week, meat-first eaters, visiting colleagues who need a sure thing near downtown hotels — and any table where “let’s get ribs” ends the debate.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? Smart for weekend evenings and groups; weekday walk-ins usually land a table.
What’s the one dish not to skip? The original-recipe ribs — the seven-and-a-half-hour slow cook is the house legend for a reason.
Is it good for big groups? Yes — the room absorbs birthday tables and team dinners without strain.
Can non-meat-eaters cope? They can — salads, seafood and sides cover the table’s minority vote.
When is it liveliest? Thursday and Friday after work, when the downtown offices empty into the bar.

Last week I visited Bâton Rouge on Albert Street in Ottawa with my wife, and overall the experience was mediocre. The main issue was the service: it took over 30 minutes to bring water after we sat down, another 30 minut…
