Wilf & Ada’s: The Brunch Worth Queuing On a Sidewalk For
The morning after a big night out, Ottawa divides into two camps: people scrolling delivery apps, and people already in line outside Wilf & Ada’s. The tiny Centretown diner takes no reservations, posts no shortcuts and still draws a sidewalk queue most weekends — because a scratch-made breakfast this good is worth standing for.
The Concept
The name honours the couple behind the old-school greasy spoon that occupied the room before; when they retired, the new owners kept the diner’s soul and rebuilt its kitchen ethics from zero. Nearly everything is made in-house from scratch — sauces, baking, the works — with ingredients pulled from local suppliers and producers wherever possible. Diner food, held to restaurant standards.
What to Order
The eggs benedict variations are the house’s calling card, and the eggs in purgatory have their own cult. Around them: proper pancakes, crisp bacon, scratch hash and coffee that respects the morning. The menu is short by design — everything on it earns its place, and specials rotate with what the suppliers bring in.
The Space
A genuinely small room — a handful of tables, a counter, sunlight and clatter. Strangers end up neighbours, plates travel fast, and the whole machine turns over with the cheerful efficiency of a diner that knows exactly what it is. Come solo with a coffee or squeeze in a group of three; larger squads should brace for a wait.
Who It’s For
Brunch loyalists, the post-party recovery crowd, solo breakfasters with a book — and anyone who thinks the best test of a kitchen is what it does with eggs before noon.
Good to Know
Can I reserve a table? No — it’s proudly walk-in only, which is half the folklore.
When is the queue shortest? Right at opening on weekdays; weekend mid-morning is peak wait.
Is it breakfast only? Breakfast and lunch — service wraps up in the early afternoon, so plan accordingly.
What’s the must-order? A benedict — then come back for the eggs in purgatory.
Is it worth the wait, honestly? Most of the city seems to think so — the line renews itself every weekend.

I had a wonderful breakfast at Wilf & Ada's. The food overall was tasty, and the Mariposa duck had a really unique and memorable flavour. The buttermilk French toast was decent, but in my opinion nothing special.
