Cocotte Bistro: Apéro Hour, Marble Bar, Late-Night French
Downtown Ottawa has plenty of places to eat and surprisingly few places to linger. Cocotte Bistro fixes that: a marble bar pouring bubbles by the glass, a weekday happy hour built around shareable French snacks, and a kitchen that keeps going late — all inside The Metcalfe Hotel, a short walk from Parliament Hill. It’s the closest the capital gets to a proper Parisian apéro.
The Concept
Cocotte plays the full French repertoire — modern, authentic, seasonally sourced — but the trick is the room’s rhythm. Breakfast bleeds into brunch, lunch into happy hour, dinner into a late-night card, so the bistro never really switches off. The design leans hard into the fantasy: geometric black-and-white floor tiles, green velvet banquettes and that long marble bar begging for an elbow.
What to Order
At the bar: bubbles by the glass and cocktails with Gallic accents. From the kitchen: steak tartare done properly, French onion soup under its cheese lid, steak frites, coq au vin and duck confit for the classicists. Save room for the Ottawa-Brest — the house’s capital-city spin on the Paris-Brest, and the best dessert pun in town.
The Space
One open-concept room with three moods: the library corner for quiet plotting, the bar for the social hour, the main bistro floor for the full dinner theatre. Velvet, marble and tile do the talking; the lighting flatters everyone after seven.
Who It’s For
After-work crews upgrading from pub pints to crémant, night owls hunting a real kitchen after ten, and dates that want French charm without the stiffness of a tasting menu.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? Online booking covers groups up to six; bigger tables go through the restaurant directly.
When is happy hour? Weekday early evenings — shareable appetizers and drink specials at the bar.
How late does the kitchen run? There is a dedicated late-night menu — rare for downtown Ottawa on weeknights.
Is there parking? Valet is available through the hotel — easiest option in the core.
What’s the one must-try? The Ottawa-Brest — the signature dessert that locals name-drop first.
