Prohibition Public House: 1920s Cocktails, 2 a.m. Kitchen Energy
Most Ottawa kitchens surrender by ten; Prohibition Public House is just warming up. This New York-style gastropub in Centretown channels the bootlegger decade — dim light, wood and vintage details — and backs it with a cocktail list split between Old-Fashioneds and the “Tommy Gun” side of the card, where drinks like the J. Edgar Hoover and the Somerset Sour carry the theme without winking too hard.
The Concept
Open since 2016, Prohibition has grown into a Centretown cornerstone by refusing to choose between bar and restaurant. Executive head chef Alex Pruner runs a farm-to-table kitchen sourcing from farms around the National Capital region, while the bar leans into prohibition-era craft: classic builds, Ontario craft beer and a wine list longer than the theme requires.
What to Order
Late-night credibility comes from the short rib poutine — the dish regulars defend loudest — alongside beef tartare, the lobster and shrimp roll and charcuterie boards of local meats and cheeses. Weekday happy hour is the budget-smart entry point; weekend brunch flips the room into daylight mode without losing the swagger.
The Space
Warm wood, vintage touches and lighting calibrated for conspiracies — cozy enough for two, loud enough for twelve. Friday and Saturday the room runs into the small hours, one of the few Centretown kitchens that genuinely keeps late company.
Who It’s For
Night shifts and show-goers hunting real food after midnight, cocktail classicists, and groups who want a bar with a kitchen that takes itself seriously.
Good to Know
How late does it actually run? Well past midnight on Friday and Saturday — kitchen and bar keep pace.
What’s the drink to start with? An Old-Fashioned from the classics, or the Somerset Sour if you trust the house.
Is there a happy hour? Yes — early weekday evenings, popular with the after-work crowd.
Do they take reservations? Yes; groups of eight or more confirm with a card, larger parties arrange by email.
Is there brunch? Weekends — the prohibition styling stays, the eggs arrive.
