This is how Ottawa Musicals is often described—a company dedicated to delivering high-quality family entertainment. It is one of the best ways to spend time in Canada’s capital and create unforgettable memories. More details at ottawa-trend.com.
The Founding of Ottawa Musicals
Ottawa Musicals was founded and led by Matt and Sarah Cassidy in 2014.
Before moving to Ottawa, the couple had been professional Equity/ACTRA performers in Toronto. As a young family, they decided it was time for a change. In 2014, they relocated to Ottawa and finally achieved their long-held dream—establishing an annual family musical in the beloved pantomime style.
For Sarah Cassidy, Ottawa was her hometown, which is why she suggested they move there. Drawing from their experience in major productions such as Ross Petty Productions Family Musicals and The Stirling Festival Panto, Matt and Sarah believed this family-friendly form of theatre would be perfect for Ottawa audiences.

About the Founders
As mentioned, Sarah Cassidy was born and raised in Ottawa. Her introduction to theatre began at a very young age. At four years old, she performed as a corn cob in a recital with Scarsella’s School of Dance.
This first experience ignited a lifelong passion for theatre. She honed her skills in dance and musical theatre, eventually landing her first major role with The Company of Musical Theatre, which was led by the late Peter Evans.
Determined to pursue a career in theatre, Sarah studied musical theatre at Sheridan College, where she trained under renowned mentors. After graduating, she performed on stages across Canada, including in Ottawa, appearing in major productions and establishing herself as a respected theatre artist.
Matt Cassidy’s journey is equally impressive. Before 2014, he worked as a producer and performer in various original shows and concerts. Throughout his career, he showcased his talents as both a musician and a performer.
Though he had a strong passion for producing, his true love was performing on stage. He appeared in several notable productions, including:
- Jersey Boys (DanCap Productions)
- Stratford Festival
- The Lord of the Rings world premiere (Mirvish Productions)
Like Sarah, Matt also graduated from Sheridan College’s musical theatre program.
What sets Ottawa Musicals’ founders apart is their versatility. Their careers extend beyond the theatre industry. For instance:
- Sarah works as a real estate agent with the Andy & Paddy Team at Engel & Völkers Ottawa.
- Matt is also a booking manager for 1Department Entertainment Services.
The couple’s two children bring even more creativity and joy into their already dynamic and artistic lives.

Pantomime or “Panto”
Pantomime, or “panto,” is a traditional theatrical entertainment form that originated in the UK. It is traditionally performed during the holiday season, including Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.
Children love panto for its lively and unique storytelling style. These performances blend comedy, music, and dance, encouraging audience participation. The experience is interactive and immersive, leaving audiences with joyful and lasting memories.
Pantomimes feature exaggerated, whimsical storylines based on classic fairy tales and well-known folk tales. These familiar stories are given a humorous and creative twist, often featuring vibrant costumes, extravagant characters, and over-the-top performances. Actors typically portray heroic protagonists, comical villains, and magical creatures.
One of panto’s most defining elements is audience interaction. Viewers are encouraged to cheer for heroes, boo villains, and even respond to performers during the show. Some actors break the fourth wall, speaking directly to the audience, making the experience even more engaging for children and parents alike.
Music plays a vital role in pantomime. Shows often include musical numbers and adapted popular songs, which enhance the storyline and encourage audiences to sing along.

GCTC – Ottawa Musicals’ Home
Ottawa Musicals performers consider the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre (GCTC) their home.
The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) was founded in 1975 by Carleton University professors and graduate students, with the goal of producing Canadian plays with social significance.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the company operated from a renovated truck garage on Gladstone Avenue. However, in the 2000s, it moved to Wellington West, a neighborhood surrounded by creative spaces and cultural venues.
Today, the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre features:
- A 262-seat main theatre
- A black box studio theatre
- Spacious lobby areas
GCTC continues to grow and thrive, serving as a hub for local theatre, artistic expression, and community engagement.
Why Ottawa Musicals is a Family Tradition
For many Ottawa families, attending an Ottawa Musicals production is an annual tradition. These live performances bring people together, offering an exciting and immersive theatrical experience.
In 2024, Ottawa Musicals celebrated its 10th anniversary. At the end of 2024 and early 2025, audiences can enjoy The Humbug Hustle: A Holiday Phantom-Ime at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, located at 1233 Wellington Street West (corner of Wellington and Holland).
