Ottawa’s Orpheus Musical Theatre Company: From Classic Musicals to the Latest Broadway Hits

What makes this theatre company so well-known, and why are its productions incredibly popular in Ottawa? Ottawa Trend shares more about the talented local amateurs and their professional work.

From the Moment of Founding

Orpheus Musical Theatre was founded back in 1906, making it the second longest-running theatre organization in North America. How did it all begin?

For many years, “Orpheus House” was associated with its founder, James Alexander Smith. In 1905, he brought his love for music to Ottawa. Originally from Dundee, Scotland, he played a key role in the debut concert of the “Orpheus Glee Club” on January 15, 1907.

The following years were crucial, as the group gradually transitioned from a choral ensemble to a true operatic society. During World War I, operatic productions were in high demand, ensuring a steady audience for Orpheus Musical Theatre. In addition to organizing theatrical performances, the choir also provided support to the military and the Ottawa community.

How Has Orpheus Musical Theatre Evolved?

From its inception, this talented musical society performed concerts in Ottawa for ten years before reorganizing as the “Orpheus Amateur Operatic Society.” The troupe’s first operatic production took place at the Russell Theatre in 1917.

In 1927, a fire at the Russell Theatre forced the troupe to move to the Ottawa Little Theatre. Over the years, Orpheus performed many productions, including “The Chocolate Soldier” (Oscar Straus) and “The Spring Maid” (Heinrich Reinhardt).

Between 1940 and 1968, Orpheus performed at Ottawa Technical High School. From 1968 to 1995, productions were staged at Ottawa’s High School of Commerce, before moving to Centrepointe Theatre in 1995.

How did Orpheus’ repertoire evolve? Until 1944, they performed two operettas annually. By 1955, changing public tastes led the musical theatre troupe to focus on Broadway musicals. Notably, Orpheus became the first amateur musical theatre company in Canada to stage Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!”

The company also began staging popular commissioned Canadian musicals, as well as children’s Christmas productions like Berthold Carrière’s “Beauty and the Beast.”

“The King and I”

A 1961 professional photograph captured Orpheus’ production of “The King and I.” The image was taken by prominent Ottawa photographer Zin Van. The lead role of Anna was played by Faith Ward, who also starred in “Fiddler on the Roof” in 1971. Faith Ward graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and later worked in theatre and as a CBC Radio host.

Funding for Orpheus Musical Theatre

The society primarily relied on ticket sales, membership fees, and local patronage for funding. In the 1970s, the role of benefactors increased, thanks to grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Theatre Ontario. These grants helped finance the construction of a building on Fairmont Avenue, which became “Orpheus House.”

This facility serves as the company’s headquarters, where rehearsals, set construction, backdrop painting, and costume creation all take place under one roof.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary

Since 1974, Orpheus Musical Theatre began staging three productions per year. Audiences could also subscribe to a season pass for shows. Interestingly, in 1988, Orpheus sponsored an original musical competition, offering a $6,000 prize and the opportunity to stage the winning work. The competition was won by William J. Davison and David Berger Jaynes for their adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre,” though the musical was never fully realized.

In 1995, Orpheus moved to Centrepointe Theatre, where “Brigadoon” became its first production. During the 2006-2007 season, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.

“Falsettos” Premiere: Review and Impressions

In 2019, Orpheus staged “Falsettos” at The Gladstone Theatre in Ottawa. The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1992, earning seven Tony nominations and winning two awards.

The 2016 Broadway revival rekindled interest in “Falsettos.” Set in 1979, the story follows a seemingly traditional family: a husband, wife, and their two children. However, everything changes when the husband leaves his wife for another man, and the wife begins dating her ex-husband’s psychiatrist. This love triangle challenges traditional family dynamics.

The show lasts two and a half hours, featuring recurring musical themes and a talented cast. Written by William Finn and James Lapine, “Falsettos” captivated audiences with humor, emotional depth, and strong performances. During the Ottawa premiere, the audience frequently laughed, empathized with the characters, and gave a standing ovation at the end, confirming the musical’s lasting impact.

  • “Memphis” (2023): A Tony Award-winning musical set in the 1950s. The story follows Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ, who falls in love with African American singer Felicia Farrell. Their love must endure societal challenges in an era of racial segregation.
