Over the years, it underwent various name changes, structural revisions, and relocations to different performance venues. However, financial stability remained an ongoing challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra was officially founded in 1944 by local musicians under the leadership of Allard de Ridder, a Dutch-Canadian conductor, violist, and composer. Until 1952, the ensemble was known as the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra, though both names were widely used. At the time, the orchestra had 75 musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, in 1960, the orchestra ceased operations due to insufficient funding. Musicians were not receiving salaries, making it impossible to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after, the National Arts Centre (NAC) announced the establishment of the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO), a full-time professional orchestra based in Ottawa. As a result, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra was dissolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ottawa-trend.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/02\/ad_4nxfch3z0iqv6ywj7cbdtok8ddcjvfjwt1wengtde-5tddwaihaeuzqajd-qsi6acs9oxhcg3d0oyfu4c3rog2cdd71ifgpllmp4rundxl-vghyflbqsrtp0ule0napemfsumz52i9gkeyy4hfb78g33deojjrszsqu1wu.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ottawa_Civic_Symphony\"><\/span>Ottawa Civic Symphony<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the dissolution of the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra, former musicians joined forces with Maurice Haycock to establish an amateur symphony ensemble known as the Ottawa Civic Symphony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1976, the orchestra was officially renamed the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra (OSO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, OSO remains a key cultural institution, contributing to Ottawa\u2019s musical heritage for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mission_and_Support\"><\/span>Mission and Support<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the OSO is to enrich the community through symphonic music while fostering public interest and appreciation. In addition to performances, OSO is actively involved in education and mentorship programs, particularly with students from the University of Ottawa\u2019s Faculty of Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OSO runs three key educational programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Young Musicians Mentorship Program \u2013 providing opportunities for students to perform alongside professional musicians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Symphony for Schools&#8221; Concert Series \u2013 bringing symphonic music to elementary schools in the Ottawa region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Students at the Symphony&#8221; Program \u2013 offering free tickets to high school students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The OSO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa-trend.com\/uk\/eternal-1102-vidomyj-violonchelist-i-kompozytor-z-ottavy-yan-yarvlepp\">musicians<\/a> and audience primarily consist of Ottawa and Ontario residents. The OSO\u2019s repertoire is distinct from that of the National Arts Centre Orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key aspect of OSO\u2019s success is its collaborations with various local music ensembles, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opera Lyra Ottawa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ottawa Choral Society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ottawa Youth Orchestra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Ottawa Choir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Central Youth Choir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These partnerships have enriched OSO\u2019s performances, much to the delight of Ottawa\u2019s music lovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the 1970s, OSO has performed in the Southam Hall of the National Arts Centre, Ottawa\u2019s largest concert venue. Since 2016, the orchestra has been led by Maestro Alain Trudel. Initially appointed as a creative consultant and principal guest conductor, Trudel later became the Music Director of the Laval Symphony Orchestra, Youth Conductor for the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and a prominent artistic leader in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local press has described Alain Trudel as an exceptional conductor, musician, and performer.<br>Former OSO concertmaster Mary-Elizabeth Brown is another notable figure in the orchestra\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ottawa-trend.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/02\/ad_4nxdrkqxjny0lqygxfvpirvwdsqz2wicjgp42vv9m73xq-t9y0vnuss1o_wofrwe4eo_rqbo3lifvcxumo8vb_l_y9nbkl0hbeu1-itzzkggmr2bqcjkt8gkbuewslboa9kvaw60u2gkeyy4hfb78g33deojjrszsqu1wu.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Music_During_the_Pandemic\"><\/span>Music During the Pandemic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic forced significant changes within the OSO. According to Erica Miller, OSO\u2019s concertmaster and head of the Artistic Planning Committee, the orchestra had to address financial challenges while maintaining its status as Ottawa\u2019s largest symphonic ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The orchestra eliminated the roles of conductor and artistic director, replacing them with an Artistic Planning Committee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alain Trudel\u2019s contract ended in 2020.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A five-member committee with voting rights was established to oversee artistic decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To sustain its operations, the OSO launched archival recordings of past concerts under the &#8220;RE-JOYce&#8221; project. In partnership with Rogers TV Ottawa, a series of recorded performances aired every two weeks, starting on April 13, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative helped reduce OSO\u2019s financial deficit, which had reached approximately $80,000, as live performances were canceled due to pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further improve its financial situation, the orchestra introduced a fundraising lottery called &#8220;Catch the Ace.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, OSO has been working on a new concept: &#8220;relaxed concerts,&#8221; designed for diverse and inclusive audiences.<br>The orchestra continues its strong collaboration with University of Ottawa music students, providing performance opportunities for young musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OSO aims to become more accessible, diverse, and modern while preserving its legacy.
